International Yoga Day celebrations at DIMHANS Dharwad

Yoga Day

Today, i,e 21-06-2022 there was festive atmosphere at Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences ( DIMHANS )staff quarters as part of celebration of 8th 'International Yoga Day' .More than 300 students and staff participated in the live yoga session which was held for a total of 1.5 hr from 7:00 AM till 8:30 AM under the instructions of senior instructor Mr. Gopal Athawale and Ms Vani Tuppad which was organised under the able and enthusiastic leadership of Dr. Mahesh Desai, Director, DIMHANS, Dharwad in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement(SVYM) Dharwad branch which was represented by Senior organiser Dr. Mohan Thambad and Mr. Jayanth and many more.This session was further validated by presence of other dignitaries like Prof. Dr. Raghavendra B Nayak, HOD, Dept of Psychiatry, Dr. Gayathri Hegde, HOD, Dept of Clinical Psychology, Dr. Sreevani, HOD, Dept of Psychiatric Nursing, Dr. Satish Koujalgi, HOD, Dept of Psychiatric Social Work, nursing superintendent, Smt. Shanta Mary and others.

Prof. Dr. Mahesh Desai called "Yogic sciences to be one of the great contributions of India to entire world" and he stressed on the importance of Yoga and Pranayama on mental health in today's stressful lifestyle. He hailed the vision of our Honorable Prime Minister, Sri. Narendra Modiji who proposed the thought of celebrating International Yoga Day at UN assembly in 2014 for the first time which further helped India become the flag bearer of Yoga at world stage.
He also emphasised on need to add yoga and pranayama to mainstream practices as part of Psychiatric/ Mental health care along with existing treatments. He took the opportunity to announce his full commitment towards establishing a seperate department of Yoga and allied sciences at DIMHANS, Dharwad in near future which will further help the cause of enhancing mental wellbeing of patients and caregivers.Dr. Mohan Thambad, chief organiser, SVYM, Dharwad spoke on need for inclusion of Yoga and Pranayama as 'complementary medicine and not to consider as an adjuvant treatment method' to existing treatment options.Compering of the programme was done by Mr. Ashok Kori and thanks were given by Mr. Ramesh M Timmapur.
