De-addiction Services

DIMHANS has a separate deaddiction unit which includes a team of doctors, psychiatric social workers and psychologists who work together to treat persons with mental and behavioural disorders due to psychoactive substance use. Dr. Mahesh M is the head of the unit.Treatments are available in both outpatient and inpatient setting. Treatment options for addiction depend on several factors such as the type of addictive disorder, the length and severity of use, its effects on the individual, and associated comorbidity. In the outpatient setting, each patient will be assessed by a team of addiction experts and individualized suggestions are provided. Individuals requiring hospitalised care are admitted. The first step involves detoxification, which involves clearing the substance from the body and limiting withdrawal reactions. Medication may be used to reduce withdrawal symptoms. Apart from medical management, the team offers psychotherapy in both individual and group format. Most frequently used is motivational interviewing, which maximizes an individual’s willingness to change and motivates them to take active physical and cognitive steps to quit substance. Another therapy used is cognitive-behavioural therapy, which helps the individual recognize and change thinking that have associations with substance use. Family intervention is used to improve family function. Relapse prevention strategies, skills training in assertiveness, coping styles, etc are also undertaken. Once discharged, the patients are routinely seen on outpatient  basis to monitor their progress to prevent relapse.
