Women’s Day 2020-2021

The employees of Dharwad Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences observed the International Women’s Day on 17th March 2021 to acknowledge, cherish and honor all the women who have chosen to challenge the norms and rise above the gender bias, inequality and create a more inclusive world through the care-work that they do on a daily basis across social, cultural and political realms of the world.

The chief guest, Dr Prajna Matihalli, Associate Professor in Commerce, Government First Grade College, Dharwad, the Guest of Honor, Dr Ajitha Desai, Psychiatric Social Worker and Special Invitee Dr Shobha Devi Patil, Assistant Professor and Former Head of Department of Psychiatric Social Work, DIMHANS along with our Director, Dr Mahesh Desai graced the occasion. They acknowledged, appreciated and encouraged all the women in the gathering to understand their own needs, practice self-care, accountability and extend our inherent nurturing quality to all the under-privileged people, especially girls and women who undergo domestic violence, trafficking and lack of education. Dr Prajna emphasized the need to move beyond our immediate family and lend ourselves to the development of the community that has given us so many opportunities to learn and grow. “If you have to challenge something, then choose to challenge the privilege that you take for granted and aim for betterment of the society as it is our responsibility to nurture not just our family but the community as well”, she said. For women to be able to do this, as Dr Ajitha pointed out, we should all focus on our own mental and physical well-being. “The goal is to be whole”, she said, as she explained that self-care is not selfish and that it is necessary for women who juggle various roles in life involving nurturing and care-work, that may or may not be acknowledged by others.

With these inspiring messages from the invitees in the background and an introduction to this year’s theme by Dr Swapna S, Senior Resident, Dept of Psychiatry, the program moved forward with an annual report on the achievements of women staff in academic progress, research and community mental health care. The theme of this year was cherished by a special song, written and sung by Dr Gayatri Hegde, Assistant Professor, Dept of Clinical Psychology. The women who have been rendering their services during the Covid-19 pandemic were recognized and honored with certificates. The guests were then felicitated and all the historic, female pioneers in various fields were remembered and cherished for their efforts that benefit the women that we are today. The program ended with vote of thanks, a lavish lunch and various party games for entertainment.
