In a latest development, DIMHANS has hired a professional Yoga trainer to conduct yoga sessions for patients receiving treatment in DIMHANS and their caregivers accompanying them. Dr. Mahesh Desai, Director of DIMHANS is a regular yoga practitioner, and was keen to bring yoga to patients of DIMHANS as a part of their daily activity scheduling and behavioural activation. In this regards, MS.Vani Thuppad from Haveri District was appointed as Yoga instructor. She has completed Diploma in Yoga in 2020 from Karnataka Janapada University, Haveri, and is presently pursuing MA in Yoga from Karnataka University Dharwad.

Yoga has benefits not just for physical health, but for mental wellbeing too. There is a growing body of research on several benefits of regular yoga practice. Regular Yoga practice has contributed to improvements for gait, balance, upper/lower body flexibility, lower body strength, and weight loss. Some clinical trials have demonstrated that relative to usual care or no intervention, individuals doing regular yoga show improved systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, waist circumference, waist/hip ratio, total cholesterol, HDL, VLDL , triglycerides, HbA1c, and insulin resistance. Additionally, yoga plays a curative, preventive and promotive role in mental health. Some of the most consistent and reproducible effects of yoga practice include stress reduction, emotion regulation, improved mood and well-being, improved cognitive functioning, enhanced respiratory function, improved physical flexibility, muscular strength and neuromuscular performance.Given the immense therapeutic effect of yoga on several mental conditions, this initiative will be beneficial for patients admitted in DIMHANS for mental healthcare.
